Henriksen was a transfer target for Neil Lennon in the summer of 2012, with the Dutch side signing the 21-year-old Norwegian for £1.75 million.

Henriksen has reportedly fallen out of favour at Alkmaar - currently coached by former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat - and the midfielder has only started three games for the Eredivisie side.

Armstrong is the latest member of Jackie McNamara’s high-flying side to be linked with a move away from Tannadice.

Press reports suggest that Neil Lennon is eyeing up a replacement for Joe Ledley who is now expected to leave the club, with Scotland under-21 captain Armstrong on the manager’s wishlist.

Armstrong is under contract until 2016, and would reportedly cost Celtic well over £1 million if United elect to sell.

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson said this weekend that United “do not want to sell anyone in the January transfer window - unless it is an exceptional offer.”
