Celtic’s preparations for their derby confrontation with Rangers have been thrown into further disarray by news that Ryan Christie will miss the October 17 fixture as the result of Covid-19 restrictions.

The bodyblow news for Neil Lennon that comes on the back of Odsonne Edouard having tested positive for the virus while on international duty with the French under-21s.

Christie will be required to self-isolate for 14 days after being deemed to have been in close contact with Stuart Armstrong, who has tested positive for the virus in Scotland training camp.

It means the Celtic attacker and his former team-mates Armstrong and Kieran Tierney will all miss Scotland’s Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Israel on Thursday, with Tierney also requiring to self-isolate as he too has been deemed to have been in close contact with Armstrong.

It gives Lennon another potential selection dilemma as the club reels from Edouard been required to self-isolate for seven days - as required by current French guidelines governing the pandemic - following his positive test for the virus.

Christie has appeared in all 13 of Celtic’s games this season, most recently being introduced from the bench for the last gasp 2-0 victory away to St Johnstone.

The 25-year-old leads the way for Celtic in assists this season with seven to his name, while he has netted three times in the fledgling campaign, and would have been a crucial component of the starting line-up Lennon would have been looking to pit against the Ibrox men.
