The Swedish defender landed awkwardly after a challenge with Dundee United defender Gavin Gunning, during the Parkhead side’s 1-0 win at Tannadice on Saturday, and the 26-year-old has returned to his homeland where national team doctor Leif Sward will examine him in Stockholm.

Lustig and gaffer Neil Lennon were relieved to learn that no bones had been broken as they left Dundee on Saturday, but the possibility of ligament damage is of concern to the Celtic boss.

The defender told the Daily Record: “I do not believe it to be anything serious but I’ll have it checked on Monday and we’ll see.”

Lustig, who had been due to fly out to Sweden to join up with his international team mates, is unlikely to be fit for his country’s double-header against the Republic of Ireland and Kazakhstan, but the Scandinavian stopper could feature for Celtic against Hearts a week on Saturday.
