Celtic board continue to be unmoved by growing calls to remove Neil Lennon

Neil Lennon is still clinging on to his job as Celtic manager as the club remain resistant to change in the face of the recent ruinous form slump.

The Scottish champions have claimed only two victories for them past 12 games, a 1-1 draw at home to St Johnstone on Sunday extending their winless run to five games and allowing Rangers to extend their lead in the Premiership to fully 13 points.

It is a sequence that has now created a clamour among all sections of the support for Lennon to be removed, which continues to be resisted by Celtic powerbroker and major shareholder Dermot Desmond, chief executive Peter Lawwell and the rest of the club’s board.

It appears there is a desire of the Celtic decision-makers to allow Lennon to take charge of the team for the Scottish Cup final against Hearts on December 20 that will provide the opportunity to bring up a quadruple treble. In a statement from Lawwell last week, he spoke of there being “no complacency whatsoever” over the on-field implosion but stated that “Neil, the players and backroom staff, who have already done so much for the club... have never been more determined to succeed [and] having enjoyed such sustained, unprecedented success, we now need strength in adversity.”

Having given their backing to the manager then, there is a feeling they do not want to flip-flop days later despite no signs of any revitalisation in the encounter with the Perth club, the draw following on from a 4-2 loss to AC Milan in the San Siro.
