Celtic move to deny interest in Kris Boyd

CELTIC have released a statement saying they have made "no attempt" to sign Rangers striker Kris Boyd.

Kris Boyd holds off a challenge from Celtic's Darren O'Dea last season

The Sun newspaper today ran a front page story claiming that Parkhead chief executive Peter Lawwell was attempting to broker a deal to land the Ibrox frontman.

The paper said Boyd would receive a weekly salary of 30,000 alongside a 1 million signing-on fee.

Today the club categorically denied they were interested in signing the 26-year-old.

A statement on Celtic's website read: "Welcome to the silly season.

"We can categorically state that Kris Boyd has never been a target for Celtic and at no time have we ever attempted to sign him.

"We will not, repeat NOT, be making a bid for the player."

The 26-year-old is out of contract this summer and is still deciding whether to sign a new deal at Ibrox.

He has been strongly tipped to join Birmingham, with Blues boss Alex McLeish a known admirer having come close in January last year to signing the man he brought to Rangers before the move broke down over personal terms.

Turkish outfit Kayserispor have also been linked with the player.
