Celtic condemn '˜paramilitary banner' fans after Uefa charge

Celtic have released a statement condemning the actions of fans during Wednesday night's win over Linfield.

The club have been handed three charges by Uefa. Two of which were related to fan behaviour - the displaying of illicit banners and stairway blocking - while the other charge concerned the advertisement of alcohol on substitute bibs.

One of the banners, thought to have been displayed by the fans group the Green Brigade, showed a paramilitary image.

Celtic, while criticising the behaviour of a “small minority” themselves, have called on other supporters to condemn their actions.

The club say they have already launched an investigation.

A statement on the club website read: “Any support for a paramilitary or proscribed terrorist organisation has no place at Celtic Park. The club has been consistent in condemning such conduct on the very few occasions in the past when it has occurred at Celtic Park. It is unfortunate that such a small minority of the crowd at Celtic Park last night behaved in such a way.

“We know that the Celtic support will join us in condemning such behaviour. Events last night have resulted in charges from Uefa in relation to the paramilitary banners and unsafe behaviour in a section of the Celtic support. The club has commenced an inquiry and will take appropriate action.”

Celtic won the match 4-0 and will face Rosenborg in the third round of Champions League qualification.
