Butcher refuses to blame Golobart as blunder hands Aberdeen key goal

Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Terry Butcher refused to criticise debutant Roman Golobart after his blunder helped Aberdeen to their first victory of the season on Saturday.

The Spaniard made his first appearance for Inverness only a day after signing on loan from Wigan Athletic but it was a match to forget for the 19-year-old after his slip handed Scott Vernon what proved to be the winning goal.

But Butcher said he was pleased with the youngster’s overall performance. “I thought he did OK in the game,” he said. “He made a mistake but the next thing he did was make a back-heel pass to the full-back.

“He is a quality footballer, he is quick and strong but he just slipped and bang, it’s a goal. I was disappointed the ball went back to him as we had good possession on the right wing.

“He will learn from that and the first person over to him was Richie Foran to get his chin up and tell him to get on with it.

“Roman apologised afterwards and so did Richie and Jonny Hayes because of the missed chances during the game.

“The players knew after the game that if they played the way they did in the second half in the first half they would have won that game. In the end I’m disappointed we didn’t take something from the game.”

The Inverness manager was also diplomatic in his response when asked about a Hayes goal that was chalked off after the referee had blown his whistle for an earlier infringement.

He said: “I’m not going to have a go at referees. I think it was a mistake but that’s the way things are going for us at the moment. It’s going to turn around for us, we just have to keep the faith and keep going.”

Aberdeen midfielder Rob Milsom was relieved to net his side’s first goal of the season after the Pittodrie side failed to score in the opening four games of the new campaign.

The former Fulham man had the easiest of finishes after some great work by Josh Magennis to break the deadlock only 12 minutes into the match, and the relief felt around Pittodrie as the ball nestled in the back of the net was obvious.

He said: “We knew it was a big game as results haven’t been going our way recently.

“It has been the same for Inverness so we knew it was massively important to get a result and we managed to get a couple of goals too. We needed a first win and I’m sure this will be a stepping stone to getting more good results.”

Aberdeen welcome Dundee in the second round of the Scottish Communities League Cup tomorrow and Milsom is hopeful his side can go on another good cup run after reaching two semi-finals last term.

He added: “We want a good cup run, similar to last year. That will be an important game and then we have Rangers at Ibrox which is another massive game to look forward to.”
