Brentford 1-2 Yeovil: Yeovil grab historic win

A STUNNING goal by Paddy Madden, the npower League One’s top scorer, helped Yeovil to an historic 2-1 play-off final victory over Brentford which secured Championship football next season.

Scorers: Brentford - Dean (51); Yeovil - Madden (6), Burn (42)

The Glovers, who had never even played in the Football League until 2003, got off to the perfect start when Madden curled home the opener after just five minutes, a lead that was doubled through Dan Burn’s header just before the interval.

Brentford enjoyed the lion’s share of possession throughout and set up a nervy second half when Harlee Dean nodded home from eight yards out. But their hopes of ending their play-off hoodoo, which now stretches to seven unsuccessful attempts, were ended thanks, in part, to Yeovil goalkeeper Marek Stech.

Gary Johnson, who experienced his own Wembley heartache with Bristol City in 2008, watched his side take the lead in stunning fashion thanks to Madden’s 24th of the campaign. League One’s Golden Boot winner had failed to score since April 6 but took just five minutes to end the drought, curling a right-foot shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

The shell-shocked Bees then looked to respond to their early setback with Tom Adeyemi going close.

Having soaked up a spell of Brentford pressure, Yeovil then showed the Bees how to finish and Fulham loanee Burn’s downward header found a way between Simon Moore, Tony Craig and Glovers striker James Hayter before landing over the line.

Into the second half, and with Brentford manager Uwe Rosler’s half-time team talk ringing in their ears, further chances arrived for the Bees before Dean met Adam Forshaw’s corner in the 51st minute to halve the deficit.

However, there were to be no further goals and Stech pulled off several crucial saves to defy Brentford whose play-off heartache goes on while the Glovers celebrate their first ever promotion to the second tier.
