Bo’ness manager looking to bring Cowdenbeath crashing to earth

BO’NESS United manager Paul Ronald was an interested spectator when the junior outfit created a Scottish Cup upset last season. Now he hopes to mastermind another today from the dugout when Second Division leaders Cowdenbeath visit Newtown Park.

Ronald, who took over at Bo’ness in the summer, watched the West Lothian side overcome his former club Queen’s Park with a 2-1 victory in last year’s competition. He said: “It was a great occasion for Bo’ness last season when I saw them put out Queen’s Park. I was impressed with them at the time as well as the fans and the club.

“I hope I can do it with them now although it will be a tough ask against Cowdenbeath. They’re sitting pretty in the Second Division.

“All the players are really looking forward to it, we want to get the game going and get into it. It’s a nice break away from the normal league business.

“It should be a good atmosphere, hopefully there will be a few neutrals as well. It will be good that way.”

Bo’ness’ former Scottish Cup finalist John Stewart is struggling with a foot injury, defender Stuart Hunter is a doubt with a groin injury and on-loan Stranraer man Stewart Devine has already been ruled out. The junior side moved into the transfer market to secure the services of former Motherwell kid Ryan Scanlon and experienced midfielder Steven Bonnar.

United’s director of football Allan McGonigal had a happy coincidence this week, when his other job as manager of the Hamilton Accies reserve side took him to Central Park for a Reserve League Cup tie.

He was able to run his eye over some of the players who may feature for Colin Cameron’s first team today, with McGonigal saying: “I will feed back a couple of things that may be useful to our manager.”

Cameron will be forced to change the line-up that has taken his side to the top of the Second Division. Work commitments have denied Cowden the services of John Armstrong and Hearts have not allowed young on-loan winger Jordan Morton to feature.
