Bobby Williamson sacked as Uganda manager

FORMER Kilmarnock and Hibs boss Bobby Williamson was today relieved of his duties as coach of the Ugandan national team.

Despite winning the regional CECAFA Cup four times in five years, the Scot - who took over from Hungarian Csaba Laszlo in 2008 - had his contract terminated so the Ugandan FA could make ‘technical changes’.

Uganda, dubbed the ‘Cranes’, have never made it to the Africa Cup of Nations finals, and lost to defending champions Zambia during qualifying for AFCON13.

The Cranes are also bottom of their World Cup qualifying group, having taken just two points from three games. Their next two matches are home ties against Liberia and Angola, but qualification seems unlikely.

Spokesman for the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Roger Mulindwa announced that Williamson’s contract had been terminated during the body’s weekly press briefing.

He said: “The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) hereby informs the general public that a notice of termination of contract has this Monday 8th April 2013 been given to the Cranes head Coach Mr. Roberts ‘Bobby’ Williamson”.

Mulindwa wouldn’t be drawn on Williamson’s successor, but added that the technical committee would make a decision over time.

Williamson departs Uganda having won 20 of the 35 games he took charge of, drawing seven and losing eight.
