Billy Brown grateful for a change of luck

The Bayview outfit had a foot through the relegation trapdoor after Darren Lavery netted, however the Borderers’ Kevin McDonald scored an own goal before substitute Liam Gormley won the game right at the end of extra time.

Gormley and manager Billy Brown are now hoping that the win gives the Fifers the confidence to overcome the in-form Blue Toon with the match-winning substitute saying: “This has been a season of highs and lows for us. We battled hard to get to the final and we got a break with the own goal but we will take confidence from this win.”

After a goalless first half, the Borderers took the lead just after the hour mark when Dylan 
Easton was brought down in the box following a challenge from Stevie Campbell.

Lavery calmly despatched the spot kick with the Fifers heading for the drop until they levelled 17 minutes later with a goal that will give Berwick substitute McDonald nightmares.

Away goalkeeper Marc McCallum was penalised for flattening David Muir but he atoned for his mistake by saving Scott McBride’s penalty.

However, McDonald had anticipated the save and he inadvertently turned the loose ball into his own net while attempting to put it out for a corner.

Gormley then grabbed the winner with just a minute of extra-time left, knocking home Bobby Barr’s pass from a couple of yards out to give the former Celtic kid his first goal in 2 months.

Manager Brown said: “We got a break with the equaliser but we deserve it as this team has not had a bit of luck since I came in. I don’t know much about 
Peterhead but this is not about how they play, it’s about how we play.”

Berwick boss Ian Little said: “I could have looked to stifle things to take us to penalties but we went for it. We were undone by a ball across the face of the box and that was that.”
