Basle start with win while Inter stunned

ON A night which saw Inter Milan humbled at home, FC Basle edged a 2-1 win over SC Otelul Galati last night in a match which saw both of Manchester United’s Group C rivals finish the match with ten men.

Alexander Frei opened the scoring early on and converted a late penalty after Marius Pena had levelled for the visitors. SC Otelul Galati’s Adrian Salegeanu and Basle’s Benjamin Huggel were ordered off late on.

The other game in Manchester City’s Group A saw Bayern Munich win 2-0 at Villareal, Toni Kroos putting the German side ahead in the first half and Rafinha adding the second after 76 minutes.

In Group D, Real Madrid held on for a 1-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb despite having Marcelo sent off 15 minutes from time. The only goal of the game came from Angel Di Maria after 53 minutes.

In Italy, Inter Milan went down to a stunning 1-0 home defeat in Group B at the hands of Trabzonspor, for whom Ondrej Celustka scored a late winner against the 2010 winners.

Elsewhere, Lille and CSKA Moscow fought out a 2-2 draw. Striker Doumbia struck twice late on for the Russian side after Lille had taken a two-goal lead thanks to Moussa Sow and Benoit Pedretti.

Finally, numerous chances were passed up by both sides as Ajax and Lyon failed to find the net in a 0-0 draw.
