Andy Geggan was the derby hero as Ayr United stretched their dominance at Somerset Park over their rivals to 24 years.

Geggan, back for a second spell after leaving Dunfermline, headed the game’s only goal six minutes before half-time and Ian McCall’s side were deserved winners of this Scottish League Cup clash.

Ayr took the game to their rivals and forced Jamie MacDonald into three decent saves while Killie offered little threat,

The Killie keeper caught Ross Docherty’s deflected shot on nine minutes, then blocked Jamie Adams’ point-blank header from a corner in 21 minutes.

MacDonald was called on again on 30 minutes when Stephen O’Donnell mistakenly set up Craig Moore when trying to dispossess Robbie Crawford.

Moore tried to place a left-foot shot into the right corner but MacDonald got down well to push it wide.

It was no surprise when Ayr beat the Killie keeper, exposed by his hapless defence in 39 minutes. No-one picked up Geggan as McDaid’s corner came in and he powered home a header on his first game since his return.

Killie had little in the way of a second half reaction and only tested Jordan Hart once when Jordan Jones shot straight at him 10 minutes from time.
