In a dramatic match the underdogs won 2-1 after extra time. Cristiano Ronaldo, who was shown a straight red card near the end of the game, headed Real ahead in the 14th minute before Atletico forward Diego Costa levelled ten minutes before half-time.

Miranda nodded in a Koke cross in the ninth minute of extra-time to deny Real a 19th cup triumph and their frustration was compounded as coach Jose Mourinho was sent from the bench for protesting a decision in the second half of regular time.

The match descended into chaos near the end with Ronaldo sent off after clashing with Atletico captain Gabi, prompting a mass brawl on the sidelines. Gabi, pictured lifting the trophy, was also sent off in the dying seconds after a second yellow.
