Aston Villa scrap goal competition due to no goals

ASTON Villa have been forced to cancel their most recent goal of the month competition - after the club failed to score a single goal during the month of October.

Paul Lambert’s squad endured an eye-watering 547 minutes of English Premier League football without finding the net, until Andreas Weimann netted in the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Before Weimann scored, at 4.16pm on November 2, their last goal had come courtesy of Gabriel Agbonlahor at 5.39pm on September 13 at Anfield - 49 days ago.

Between Agbonlahor and Weimann’s goals, Villa lost 3-0 at home to Arsenal; 3-0 away to Chelsea; 2-0 at home to Manchester City; 3-0 away to Everton and 2-0 away to Queens Park Rangers.

Since the season started, Villa have scored just five goals; three courtesy of Weimann and two from Agbonlahor, and have lost six consecutive league games - their worst run since 1967.

During the goal drought, Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo scored 20 goals himself; Scotland rejected independence; Brazil, Bulgaria, Latvia, Sweden and New Zealand held general elections; Estonia became the first former Soviet state to legalise gay partnerships; Malala Yousafzai won the Nobel Peace Prize and Kim Jong-un reappeared in public after a five-week absence.

Villa’s next match is against fifth-placed West Ham, who have beaten Manchester City, Liverpool and QPR, scoring 19 goals in the process.

Midfielder Diafra Sakho, with six strikes, has netted more goals himself than Villa have managed as a team.
