Arbroath 0 - 2 Inverness: Andrew Shinnie double sees Caley safely through

AN ANDREW Shinnie double ensured Inverness progressed to the third round of the Scottish Communities League Cup with a 2-0 victory over Second Division Arbroath.

Scorers: Inverness - Shinnie (7, 71)

Attendance: 672

The SPL side exited this competition at the same stage last year with a 1-0 defeat to Ayr but Shinnie eased their nerves with a seventh-minute goal, before putting the result beyond doubt 19 minutes from time.

Arbroath, managed by former Inverness favourite Paul Sheerin, went into the match full of confidence having won three matches in a row, scoring 10 goals in the process but the visitors went ahead when Shane Sutherland picked out Shinnie, who slotted the ball into the corner of the net from 12 yards out.

The home side could have equalised just past the hour mark but Darren Gribben failed to keep his effort under the crossbar. They were to rue that miss when Sutherland fed Shinnie, who unleashed a fierce shot which smashed off the underside of the bar and into the net.
