Arbroath 0 - 0 Stenhousemuir: Promotion hunt still on for Arbroath

ARBROATH picked up a point in a goalless draw with visitors Stenhousemuir to climb back above Forfar in the play-off race and further dent Ochilview hopes of being involved in the chase for promotion.

However, the home team may also regret the blank scoreline given that Forfar have a game in hand on them and Brechin City have two.

Arbroath player/manager Paul Sheerin came close to scoring the opening goal midway through the first half when he fired in a trademark left-footed drive that only just cleared the bar.

Stenhousemuir then almost benefitted from a scramble in the home box with 29 minutes gone.

The best opening of the first period fell to Arbroath’s Ewan Smith just before the break. However, the on-loan Hibernian youngster was crowded out in the danger area before he could pull the trigger.

The Warriors’ Bryan Hodge was unlucky not to find the net four minutes into the second period when his curling effort from the edge of the box crept narrowly over Scott Morrison’s goal.

It looked like the deadlock was going to be broken with little more than an hour played when the ball reached substitute Lee Sibanda only a couple of yards from goal, but he prodded his shot wide when he ought to have done better.

Arbroath kept on pushing forward and Steven Doris sent an effort just past the post 90 seconds from the end, with Sheerin almost becoming a last-gasp hero until his his effort rose high over the crossbar.
