Annan through to face former manager Irons

The four outstanding Scottish Cup ties were settled on Saturday with Annan Athletic, East Stirlingshire, Elgin City and Inverurie Locos securing a passage to the third round.

Annan and Alloa Athletic had drawn 2-2 in their first meeting and Harry Cairney’s men won through to face Stenhousemuir – managed by former Galabank player manager Davie Irons – courtesy of a 2-0 success.

Bryan Gilfillan opened the scoring at Galabank when he headed in a David Cox cross in the first half and they were through to the next round six minutes from time when Cox curled over a corner and Aaron Muirhead head-flicked home.

Extra-time goals from Nico Gibson and Fraser Team helped East Stirlingshire to a 4-2 success over Buckie Thistle at Victoria Park. Andy Stirling gave Shire an early lead with a great strike from a 25-yard free-kick and Bradley Coyne made it two before half-time. Buckie roared back and forced extra time when Craig McMillan and Mark Chisholm hit second-half goals. However, substitutes Gibson and Team struck in extended play to ease Shire through.

Elgin City scored twice in the first three minutes of their 5-2 defeat of Fraserburgh through Ben Hay’s own-goal and a Craig Gunn cross that became a shot. Although Graham Johnston quickly pulled a goal back for the Broch, it was game over by half-time with Jason Crooks and Brian Cameron adding further goals and the home side also missing a penalty when Stuart Leslie erred. Mark Nicolson made it five with Johnston adding his second to complete the scoring with the win earning the Borough Briggs men a home tie against Queen’s Park in the next round.

A six-minute second half hat-trick from Neil Gauld saw Inverurie Locos turn a two-goal deficit against ten-man Clachnacuddin into a 3-2 win to set up a tie against Peterhead.

l Queen’s Park ended a run of nearly ten years and ten months without a win at Stair Park with a 3-2 win over Stranraer in Saturday’s only Third Division game.

Jamie Longworth had given Queen’s Park the lead when he headed in a Martin McBride corner after 12 minutes, however Martin Grehan levelled 11 minutes later. Craig Malcolm swept in a Grehan pass to put Stranraer ahead before half-time and that is how things stood until home defender Scott Taggart looked to clear his lines with a full blooded boot down the pitch. The ball struck visiting substitute Craig Smith on the head and looped over goalkeeper David Mitchell to bring the scores level and Ian Watt struck from close range to take the points back to Glasgow.
