Ally McCoist backs Neil Lennon amid Celtic return talk

Former Rangers boss Ally McCoist believes there's a good possibility Neil Lennon would return as manager of Celtic.

The former Hoops boss is current joint-favourite to succeed Ronny Deila, who’s been under pressure for a number of months and may not last in his role beyond the summer.

Lennon recently became available once again after leaving Bolton Wanderers. Lennon lasted less than 18 months at the Macron Stadium. He saved the side from relegation last season but exited with the club sitting bottom of the English Championship this campaign.

Financial problems plagued the Lancashire club with players’ wages often being delayed. McCoist expressed his sympathy for Lennon having gone through a similar situation at Rangers.

“Now he’s moved on, is it a possibility he could go back to Celtic? I would have to say yes. He did an exceptional job at Celtic,” said McCoist.

“The current Celtic boss is a man I have sympathy for because, no matter what he does, it’s probably not going to be good enough.

“Scottish football for the last three or four years has been in a bizarre situation where nobody knows what’s good, bad or indifferent.

“I sympathise and understand what Lennon’s been going through more than most.

“Our own club went into administration then liquidation. Players don’t know if they’re going to get paid. There are restrictions on you all over the place. It is an extremely difficult job.”
