The Wasps had assistant manager Paddy Connolly in charge after the resignation of Danny Lennon on Monday night and they made an awful start, improved and then had an awful finish.

Dumbarton opened the scoring after just 19 seconds when Donald McCallum accepted a pass from Kevin Cawley and cut in from the left wing before beating Andy McNeil from 20 yards.

The lead was doubled on 14 minutes when Cawley ran for 50 yards before finding Grant Gallagher, whose low cross was turned in by Garry Fleming.

It took a good stop from McNeil to prevent a third before the break after Cawley had thumped a McCallum pass goalward.

Alloa came out more determined for the second half and Sons keeper Mark Brown had to turn away a Michael Duffy drive. Eddie Ferns curled an effort wide.

Dumbarton, though, ensured that there would be no fightback when substitute Jordan Kirkpatrick cracked a shot high into net on 78 minutes with Kirkpatrick setting Calum Waters up to tap home the fourth in the last minute. In injury time, a Kirkpatrick shot squirmed under McNeil to end Dumbarton’s night on a high note.

Annan Athletic booked their place against Hamilton Accies by seeing off Inverurie Locos 1-0 in their replay at Galabank.

The visitors started off well with Andy Hunter knocking an effort wide from 25 yards and Kieran Adams heading just over. As the Highland League side continued to press, Bryan  Gilfillan almost diverted the ball into his own net and John  Maitland saw a shot blocked.

Annan worked their way into things and they led at half time after Peter Weatherston beat the offside trap on 41 minutes and slipped the ball past the advancing Scott Mathieson.

The Galabank men looked to kill the tie off at the start of the second half and Matty Flynn’s 20-yard shot brought a fine save from Mathieson. As the hosts continued to press Smart  Osadolor had an effort pushed past for a corner.

The kick was was met by the head of Steven Swinglehurst but his effort drifted over the bar.

Locos will, however, feel disappointed at not taking the game to extra time as a scramble with five minutes left saw the ball ricochet off the Annan bar.

There was further heartbreak in injury time when Gordon  Forsyth’s 30-yarder came crashing off the woodwork.
