Alloa Athletic 0 - 3 Queen of the South: Queens command

Queens turned in a commanding performance to earn a much-needed win as they attempt to kick-start their season. It has been a tough few weeks for Queens with a recent slump but this was an excellent showing.

Alloa started well with some good pressure but Queens were organised in defence.

Queens went in front on 16 minutes with Iain Russell heading home after Mark Durnan had nodded on Kevin Holt’s free-kick. Only a great save by Scott Bain on 20 minutes prevented Russell from getting his second from a point-blank header after Ian McShane’s cross.

Alloa were denied an equaliser by a fine save from Zander Clark who tipped over Kevin Cawley’s close-range header on 33 minutes.

Queens went close on 40 minutes with Bain diving to save from a powerful Chris Higgins header from a Chris Mitchell corner. Bain miscued a clearance straight to Gavin Reilly on 70 minutes and he found Russell who clinically finished.

The Wasps were denied a lifeline when Durnan headed off the line from a Graeme Holmes shot.

The points were sealed on 74 minutes with Reilly passing the ball home from the edge of the box.
