Alex McLeish's CV

The new Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has a successful record as a manager, dating all the way back to his first season at Motherwell.

MOTHERWELL

Guided the Lanarkshire club to second in the SPL, behind Rangers, in his first season after succeeding Tommy McLean. However, the following two seasons were spent battling relegation.

HIBERNIAN

Taking over immediately after relegation, McLeish won the First Division title in his first season to ensure an immediate top-flight return. The Edinburgh club would go on to reach a final and a semi-final in the Scottish Cup during his reign.

Won both domestic cups in his first season and went one better in 2002-03, guiding the Gers to the SPL title as well to complete a treble. A dramatic title success in 2005 followed and he then became the first manager to guide a team to qualification from a European group stage but left his post at the end of the 2005-06 season.

SCOTLAND

His brief reign with the national team failed to end their long absence from international tournaments, but their 1-0 win over France in Paris raised hopes and they were only edged out by Italy in a final-game decider.

BIRMINGHAM

McLeish failed to save the club from relegation after taking over in November 2007 but they won the Championship title at the first attempt.

An impressive first season back in the Premier League saw him guide Blues to a club-record 12-game top-flight unbeaten run and become the first manager to win the Premier League Manager of the Month award with the club before a ninth-placed finish, Birmingham's best for over 50 years. He added last season's Carling Cup with a memorable Wembley win over Arsenal but a subsequent drop-off in form meant Blues were relegated.
