Airdrie United 2-2 Hamilton Accies: A humdrum encounter

THIS humdrum encounter was a derby in name, but certainly not in nature although a late exchange of goals might make this drab local tussle stay in the memory longer than it deserves.

Scorers: Airdrie United: Moore 63pen; Bain 90; Hamilton Accies: May 61, 90

Even though moments of quality football were of blink-and-you-miss-it proportions, the defensive standards were poor enough to allow both teams to strike the woodwork in the first half. Jamie Bain and Jordan Moore came close for the Diamonds, with Stevie May, who also missed a sitter from three yards, doing likewise for the visitors.

Eventually a breakthrough arrived on the hour mark. May had been the game’s shining light and again showed his quality with a clinical turn and finish befitting of a better game to give Accies the lead.

Airdrie instantly got back on terms courtesy of a well-taken Moore penalty after referee David Somers’ hotly disputed decision following a challenge on Bain. Airdrie then looked to have won it inside stoppage time when Bain whacked a right-foot volley past Kevin Cuthbert.

However, the home team failed to hang on for the remaining seconds and May was again on hand to strike for Accies to level matters with a prodded finish.
