Aguero hat-trick keeps City run going as Stoke shock Liverpool

Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Manchester City went to the top of the Barclays Premier League for two and a half hours at least thanks to a 3-0 defeat of Wigan at the Etihad Stadium.

The Argentina forward, below, has had no trouble adapting to life in England and his three goals means he has scored six in four games since his move from Atletico Madrid. His effort contrasted with Carlos Tevez, who missed a penalty to add to being stripped of the captaincy this week. Aguero scored with a low shot in the 13th minute, and added two more in the second half when he converted first-time from Samir Nasri’s inch-perfect low ball and he took little time to complete his hat-trick, converting Silva’s pass.

Daniel Sturridge was a key figure as Chelsea won 2-1 at Sunderland. His cross led to John Terry putting the Blues ahead in 18 minutes and they doubled that five minutes after the break, Sturridge back-heeling into the net. Sunderland, who announced earlier that their record signing Asamoah Gyan is to join United Arab Emirates side Al-Ain on a season-long loan, pulled one back through Ji Dong-won in the final minute.

Liverpool went 1-0 down to a contentious penalty at Stoke when Jamie Carragher was adjudged to have fouled Jon Walters, who got up to fire down the middle and seal a shock victory for the hosts.

Tottenham won 2-0 at Wolves, going ahead halfway through the second half when Scott Parker, who joined last week from West Ham, poked the ball through for Emmanuel Adebayor to slot home. Spurs doubled their lead ten minutes from time, Jermain Defoe firing home from close range.

Everton and Aston Villa drew 2-2 at Goodison Park. Leon Osman put the Toffees ahead only for Villa to equalise in the 63rd minute through Stiliyan Petrov. The hosts regained the lead through a Leighton Baines spot-kick, but the visitors levelled when Gabriel Agbonlahor headed home seven minutes from time.
