Aberdeen have been given a boost following the disappointment of their Europa League exit with the news that prolific striker Adam Rooney has signed a contract extension at Pittodrie.

Rooney, who missed a crucial penalty in Thursday night’s defeat by Maribor but who has scored 60 goals in just 106 appearances since joining the club in January 2014, has committed his future to the Dons until 2020.

“When you make a decision about your future there are a number of factors to think about but in truth this was an easy decision,” said the 28-year-old. “I am settled here, my family love it, we really enjoy living in the area, the football club is going well at the minute after a good couple of seasons and hopefully we are going on to have some more strong seasons in the years ahead.”

Manager Derek McInnes, whose side open their Premiership season against St Johnstone this weekend, added: “Signing a striker of Adam’s quality for a further four years sends a clear message as to where we want to be.”
