Aberdeen’s Karl Arnason set to depart for Rotherham

Rotherham United have won the race to sign Aberdeen’s Kari Arnason, with the in-demand midfielder penning a two-year deal with the League Two side.

The 29-year-old will join his new club on July 1, when his contract with the Pittodrie outfit officially expires.

The Millers have beaten Paul Sturrock’s Southend United as well as several other clubs in England and abroad in the battle for the Icelander’s signature.

Beaming United manager Steve Evans lauded: “Kari is without doubt an outstanding talent and I am delighted we have brought him to Rotherham United. I followed his performances last season at Aberdeen with real interest. I have signed the lad to play in midfield but his versatility is a major asset.

“Kari is technically outstanding, he is very creative in the attacking third, his all round range of passing is top class. When you add that to his physique, defensive awareness and work rate there is no doubt this is a major signing for all of us, the staff, players and of course our supporters who will love him.”

Arnason departs Aberdeen after one season, having joined last summer from Plymouth Argyle. The former Aarhus and Hafnarfjordur man was a notable bright spark in an underwhelming campaign for Craig Brown’s charges, impressing in 40 appearances for the Dons.
