Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson has paid tribute to the club’s former defender Christian Mbulu who has died at the age of 23.

Mbulu moved to Fir Park from Millwall and made six appearances for the Lanarkshire club in the 2018-19 season. He returned to England to play for Crewe Alexandra and Morecambe.

“Christian was a gentleman. He always had a smile on his face playing the game he loved,” Robinson said.

“This is a tragic loss for his family, his friends and all of the football community, and to us at Motherwell FC who had the opportunity to work with him.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time.”

The London-born centre-back started his career with non-league Brentwood, before joining Millwall in 2016.

Motherwell chairman Jim McMahon said: “We are shocked to hear of the news of Christian’s death,” he said. “He was such a friendly, pleasant young man who we loved having around Fir Park.

“Our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time. We hope their privacy is respected by everyone as they try to come to terms with their loss.”

Mbulu made his first-team debut for Motherwell as a substitute against Rangers at Ibrox in November 2018. His final appearance for the club was a home game against Kilmarnock on Boxing Day that year.

Morecambe said in a statement: “His loss will be painfully felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
