Football Nostalgia: Easter Road side are given wake-up call

HIBS appeared to be somewhat lethargic, in this game, particularly in the first half but perhaps the speed and enthusiasm of Falkirk took them by surprise.

Hibs should have gone into the second half two goals down but for a penalty award converted by Eric Stevenson with seconds to go before the half-time whistle. Hibs roused themselves and Joe Baker and Stevenson, well backed up by new man Duncan, pulled the game out of the fire.

That was where Whigham in goal and Lambie, Hunter and Rae stepped in.

The goalkeeper, particularly, was in first-class form, and it was only by a second successfully-taken penalty award by Stevenson that Hibs managed to scrape a point.

Curiously enough Falkirk's second goal also came from a successful penalty kick by Maxwell. The Brockville opening goal was a freak. Left-half Fulton was no more than a couple of yards from the right-hand corner flag when he floated a pass into the goalmouth. Simpson seemed to have it covered but the ball took a mysterious swerve and ducked into the net much to the goalkeeper's - and Fulton's - amazement.

Falkirk took a lot of credit from the result and were apparently Hibs' bogey team at the time. They had won the corresponding match the previous year 3-0 and also won at Brockville to take four points from Hibs.
