Football news in brief: Adams takes Byrne to Ross County

DEREK Adams last night made Hibs' prolific youth striker Kurtis Byrne his fifth close season signing for Ross County. Byrne, 21, impressed Adams during the Dingwall manager's spell as Hibs assistant. Adams said: "Kurtis was a prolific goal scorer in the Hibs youth and reserve teams. He is quick, likes to make intelligent runs between central defenders and has a terrific ability to score goals. He is a youthful addition to our squad."

Boateng on verge of move to Bayern

Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng has agreed to join Bayern Munich for four years but City have not yet agreed the deal. Germany international Boateng joined City from Hamburg last year, but failed to win a regular starting place. "I have agreed with Bayern a four-year deal. Now it is up to Manchester to make it work. They are making things a bit difficult," the 22-year-old told Kicker magazine.

Young Swiss beat fancied Icelanders

Switzerland's Fabian Frei and Innocent Emeghara struck first-half goals in a 2-0 win over Iceland as the Swiss moved three points clear at the top of Group A in the European Under-21 championship. Denmark moved into second place after goals from Christian Eriksen and Nicolai Jorgensen secured a 2-1 victory over Belarus, who went ahead through Dmitri Baga.

Sagna: 'Fabregas wants to join Barca'

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna claims captain Cesc Fabregas wants to join Barcelona this summer. "I can say it's true that Cesc wants to go to Barca," the right-back told former Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Fernandez on France's RMC radio station. "Fabregas wants to return to his country of birth, to his city, where his family are; he wants to play for one of the best teams in the world, Barcelona, and that's understandable."

Shearer in frame for Cardiff vacancy

Former Newcastle manager Alan Shearer is one of a handful of candidates being considered for the vacant manager's job at Cardiff City. The Bluebirds have been without a manager since sacking Dave Jones on 30 May. Were Shearer to be appointed it would be his first managerial role since his ill-fated spell at Newcastle at the end of the 2008-09 season, where he won just one of his eight games in charge as the club was relegated from the Premier League.
