Fleming steals the show as Dundee pack prove too much for Boroughmuir

Scotland Sevens man James Fleming may have stolen the show with the try of the day and the sponsors’ man-of-the-match award, but even he will admit that it was the Dundee HSFP pack that set up their victory over Boroughmuir at Meggetland on Saturday.

The visitors dominated early on and really should have put the result out of sight by half-time. However, fair play to the hosts who recovered from a poor start to make a real fist of it.

After the entertaining encounter Dundee captain Neil Dymock said: “We have two home games coming up now and we wanted to give ourselves momentum by getting a win at Meggetland. It is not something we have done often in the past and although we let Boroughmuir back in, we showed glimpses of what we can do and overall I am happy.”

Dymock and his front-row colleagues Simon Forrest and Alan Brown were the catalysts for this win, giving their ’Muir counterparts such a hard time that young prop Robbie Wilson was withdrawn after 24 minutes.

By that stage the Taysiders were 8-0 up thanks to a try from back-row Andy Redmayne and a penalty by Australian full-back Cameron Wyper on debut.

Two minutes after Wilson was taken off, the lead became 15-0, scrum-half Andy Dymock ghosting in past some lacklustre ’Muir defence to score a try which Wyper converted.

That was the cue for the home side to kick-start their season, pulling the score back to 15-10 at the break with Sep Visser grabbing a try from full-back and Ally Warnock kicking five points. Less than 60 seconds after the interval it was 15-15, captain Malcolm Clapperton scoring a try for Boroughmuir, but hurting himself in the process and hobbling off.

Dundee HSFP replacement Jack Steele, kicked three penalties to give his side a 24-15 cushion before Warnock pulled it back to 24-18 with nine minutes to go.

Fleming sealed things for the visitors with four minutes to go with a superb score, running a turnover ball fully 80 metres to dot down under the posts. ’Muir grabbed a losing bonus point late on with a try, but it was the visitors’ day.
