Fishing: Weather matched superb action on Lake of Menteith

AT long last the bigger waters are starting to open up.

I had the honour and pleasure to be invited to the Lake of Menteith for Chairman's Day and, as luck would have it, the gale force winds which were threatening abated to leave a summer-like day.

After the traditional speeches, most of the boats headed for the early season hotspots of the road shore, Hotel Bay, Rookery, and Sam's Point.

Although some fish were showing on the surface, the majority of takes were sub surface.

My boat partner and I went for the percentages by fishing on the move every 20 minutes or so and this proved to be a successful tactic. A fast glass line with Cormorants and yellow lures, was the best on the day and we took 15 fish to the boat in an exceptional session. The quality of the fish was amazing and the fight they put in was outstanding.

The only downside was the amount of jack pike we hooked but that is a trivial matter.

Many boats came in with limit bags and it is hard to imagine that a few short weeks ago, the lake was still frozen over. A lot of the credit must lie with the fishery staff for making the stay memorable and it certainly won't be long until I return for what can only be described as superb fishing.
