Fishing: Tweeddale is hard to beat

You have to take your hat off to the management at Tweeddale fishery, not only for keeping the water open but for fishing very well.

When I arrived, the two lower ponds were, and still are, completely frozen over. But the top and main pond is 98 per cent clear of ice and looking good.

The roads were treacherous which is why only a handful of anglers had ventured out. But what a day was in store for us with fish up to double figures coming to the nets all in perfect condition and fighting fit.

As the icy wind was blowing straight over the dam wall I made off in that direction. Not only was it easier to cast but kept the cold off to a minimum. I strapped on my midge tip line with an eight foot leader as I simply can't see by it for presentation. The water was gin clear so I attached a small Yellow Dancer and cast out then started counting down the sinking speed. Only two casts in and I was struck with what felt like a rocket as a fish of in excess 8lb took my fly out in to mid water.

Fighting the cold water, I managed to hold on and coax it back to the bank. After reviving it and a few admiring glances I released it to fight another day. Moving forward every half hour or so I either got fish or got offers. I finished up after a few hours feeling as if I had gone well into double figures and the quality was amazing. Talking to the others who ventured out the Yellow Dancer, White Cats, and Blobs were the best lures. Everyone was more than happy.
