Fishing: Isle of Bute competition is always the best of Fads

One of my favourite competitions has to be on Loch Fad on the Isle of Bute.

Held over two days it is important to get off to a good start. However, it proved to be one of those days when nothing would go right. Despite having the right tactics and being in the right area I could not get off the mark until late in the session. And when I eventually got going it was too late as plenty of fish were being caught.

Fast sinking lines with Blobs, Yellow Dancers and black and green proved the most successful patterns, I got two offers in quick succession from behind the cages on an orange blob, Landing one at 4lb and losing another around the same mark.

It was like an Indian summer and most of the fish were getting hooked within three feet of the bank.

In the second session, however, wind and rain picked up to make it a testing time. Very few fish were caught with the exception of one boat who managed to find a pod of fish away from the fleet. They managed to get 17 with the best coming in at 9lb. It was a fantastic performance though not enough to outstrip the eventual winners.

It was a great weekend away and one that I always enjoy meeting up with friends old and new.
