Fishing: Chill descends on Lake as rainbow trail goes cold

WHAT started out as a pleasant day on the Lake of Menteith turned very cold in the end.

Starting out in Hotel bay in a nice ripple, we played the percentages and worked the banks and bays for the first hour or so.

It was not until we ended up in Cages Bay that the sport started.

Fishing a midge tip line with a cast of Bibio, Kate McLaren and White Cat on the point, I had my first trout come to the Bibio. Not a big fish but it was sport and that's all that matters.

I can't be certain but I believe the fish are not as big as they have been in previous seasons but they do scrap well.

We covered a second drift and picked up another rainbow in nearly the same area.

Then we moved on to the Malling shore without success but did pick up one or two in the Heronry before it got really cold.

From the sound of the boat engines, it was clear that we weren't the only ones still looking for fish but, in the end, I was one short of my bag limit.

Still there are bad as well as good days – which makes the good days even more enjoyable.
