First Formula E electric car unveiled

FORMULA E has unveiled the car it hopes will revolutionise motor sport.

On the opening day of the Frankfurt Motor Show, FIA president Jean Todt and Formula E Holdings CEO Alejandro Agag took the wraps off the Spark-Renault SRT_01E fully-electric single-seater. The first global electric race series is due to start next September, taking in 10 cities.

The car has been designed and built by Spark Racing Technology and possesses a Dallara chassis made from carbon fibre and aluminium.

McLaren Electronics Systems is to provide the electric motor, gearbox and electronics, whilst Williams Advanced Engineering is responsible for the design and supply of batteries and battery-management systems.

Michelin has been given a three-year contract and are to make one durable 18-inch tyre to cater for wet and dry conditions, helping to reduce overall costs and promote sustainability.
