First Division: Gordon Chisholm hails players' response

Dundee manager Gordon Chisholm brought the curtain down on the worst week in his near 35 years in football by leading his unpaid players to a 2-1 win over Morton at Dens Park.

Chisholm said: "It is a good end to what has been the hardest week of my time in football. I am sure other people may feel the same but for me it has been very difficult. You do not know what reaction you are going to get from players to stories flying about and when people don't get paid it becomes even more difficult.

"After this week I have to say that the players did themselves proud and they gave everyone what they were looking for with a gusty hard-fought win."

But Chisholm reckons that the level of commitment shown cannot be asked for every week, saying: "The players have been given Monday off and hopefully we will have a way forward by the time they come back in on Tuesday as you cannot keep that going with some kind of threat hanging over them."

Matt Lockwood gave the Dark Blues the lead from the penalty spot after Stephen O'Donnell had been pulled back on 25 minutes, but Peter Weatherson netted from close in to deflate the spirits of the 4,000 crowd.

Colin McMenamin headed home a Lockwood corner to put financially stricken Dundee ahead on 57 minutes.

Leaders Dunfermline lost for the first time in five games as they went down 2-0 away to Queen of the South.

Andy Dowie put through his own goal seven minutes into the second half when his passback from the edge of the box went through the legs of goalkeeper Chris Smith. Nine minutes later Smith was caught well off his line and Willie McLaren lobbed him from nearly 40 yards out.

Home midfielder Paul Burns was sent off two minutes from time when he picked up his second yellow card.

Home manager Kenny Brannigan said: "We were the far better side in the second half and whilst the first goal was fortunate I thought the second was a great piece of quick thinking from Willie McLaren." Raith Rovers' unbeaten start to the league campaign was ended with a 2-0 defeat at home to Stirling Albion, who went ahead a minute from half-time after Chris Aitken had been fouled in the box by Stephen Simmons. The midfielder fired home the spot kick.

Raith came back into things in the second half and Willie Dyer rattled the woodwork, but Stirling stayed strong and they broke up the park in the last minute, with Gordon Smith scoring to clinch the win. Cowdenbeath were given a hammering at Falkirk as the Bairns recorded their best win of the season, winning 5-1.

Jack Compton took advantage of a Scott Linton error to shoot Falkirk ahead, but he took a knock shortly afterwards and was replaced by Mark Millar.Mark Stewart headed in a second midway through the first half and Millar piled on the agony for the injury-hit visitors when he curled the ball in before half-time.

Carl Finnigan headed in a fourth before Millar netted from the penalty spot to make it five with 11 minutes left.

Jimmy Nicholl's men grabbed a consolation when Mark Ramsay scored from the spot.

Partick Thistle won on the road for the first time this season, and moved off the bottom, as they defeated Ross County 2-0 at Dingwall thanks to a first-half goal from Paddy Boyle, who capitalised on a mistake from keeper Michael McGovern, and a second- half clincher from Chris Erskine.
