FA Cup round-up: Black Cats suffer shock FA Cup elimination by Notts County

League One Notts County secured the shock of the FA Cup third round as they claimed a 2-1 win over Premier League Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Craig Westcarr and Lee Hughes got the goals for the visitors before Darren Bent pulled one back from the spot for the hosts as Black Cats boss Steve Bruce paid the price for resting several first-team regulars.

West Brom and Blackpool were the two other Premier League casualties. West Brom were sunk by Reading as the in-form Shane Long grabbed the only goal, while the Seasiders lost 2-0 to Southampton as Lee Barnard and Guly got the goals.

Wolves were held to a 2-2 draw against Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium, while Kyle Walker, Marc Albrighton and Stiliyan Petrov were on target for Aston Villa in a 3-1 win at Sheffield United.

Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander spared Bolton's blushes with a late goals in a 2-0 win against non-league York.

Stoke face an away replay after a 1-1 draw with Cardiff, while Everton were 5-1 winners at Scunthorpe as Louis Saha, Jermaine Beckford, Seamus Coleman, Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines grabbed the goals, Michael Collins responding for the hosts at Glanford Park.

Fulham beat League One Peterborough 6-2. Diomansy Kamara helped himself to a hat-trick as Kelvin Etuhu, Zoltan Gera and Jonathan Greening also got on the scoresheet.

Wigan won 3-2 at Hull, West Ham beat Barnsley 2-0, and Birmingham won 4-1 win at Millwall.

Middlesbrough were dumped out by League Two side Burton Albion, Blackburn beat Championship leaders QPR 1-0, and Norwich are out after Jimmy Smith's header gave Leyton Orient victory at Carrow Road.

Portsmouth lost 3-1 to Brighton, Sheffield Wednesday caused an upset winning 3-0 at Bristol City, Swansea were 4-0 winners over Colchester, Watford came from a goal down to beat Hartlepool 4-1, and Burnley defeated Port Vale 4-2.

In the day's other ties, Keiren Westwood saved a penalty as Coventry survived a late fightback from Crystal Palace to hold on for a 2-1 victory, Huddersfield Town beat Dover 2-0, Nottimgham Forest won 2-1 at Preston, and Torquay United knocked out Carlisle United 1-0 athome.
