F1: Webber gifted victory

Mark Webber was grateful to be handed a rare gift that has propelled him back to the top of the Formula One standings.

Webber is now four points clear following his fourth win this year and sixth of his career following a crushing success in Hungary.

The Australian appeared destined for third until the deployment of the safety car on lap 15 that turned the race on its head. Webber was the fortunate beneficiary, whilst Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel was the unlucky loser as he could only finish third behind Ferrari's Fernando Alonso after 70 laps at the Hungaroring.

"It's a pretty unexpected victory," said Webber. "I knew unless Seb made a mistake or had a problem, it was always going to be his race. Most of my other victories haven't been gifted to me, so I will take this one."

Vettel was left bemoaning the safety car, a dodgy radio and the stewards for failing to convert pole into a win for the sixth time in seven races this season. The 23-year-old claims the loss of his in-car radio resulted in him sleeping when the safety car returned after two laps as he had been relying on a call from his pit wall.

By the time he realised what was happening Webber, who had yet to pit in contrast to Vettel, had stolen a march on his team-mate. Vettel, though, had allowed the gap to exceed what is permissible in the regulations - ten car lengths - and he was given a drive- through penalty.

The German expressed his anger as he drove through the pit lane by waving his clenched fists, and after stepping out of the car he remonstrated with Herbie Blasch, the FIA's race observer. "People told me what happened. I don't like it, but I can't change it now," seethed Vettel. "When I got the drive-through, I was pretty angry."

A gearbox failure on lap 24 cost Lewis Hamilton potentially fourth and undoubtedly his championship lead, whilst McLaren team-mate Jenson Button finished a lap down in eighth. The safety car sparked chaos in the pit lane as many drivers dived in for new tyres. Mercedes' Nico Rosberg immediately lost his right-rear that bounced through the pit crews, knocking unconscious Williams mechanic Nigel Hope. Robert Kubica's lollipop man released the Pole too early, sending the Renault crashing into Adrian Sutil's Force India.
