Evan Williams hails State of Play

EVAN Williams has spoken of his immense pride in State Of Play after he finished fourth in the John Smith's Grand National on his first racecourse appearance since last year's race.

The talented, but fragile, 11-year-old placed third in the world's most famous steeplechase 12 months ago and again excelled on Saturday. Although never threatening to land a blow in the finish, as the Donald McCain-trained Ballabriggs took the glory, State Of Play stayed on strongly to finish in the money for a third consecutive year.

"He's a little bit tired and dehydrated, but he's out in the paddock and happy," said Williams. "It was a very hot day and I think it stifled a lot of horses, but our little fellow ran his heart out and I am obviously very proud of him."

The Nicky Richards-trained Skippers Brig beat Ballabriggs at Kelso a month ago but could only finish ninth when reopposing at Aintree. The trainer was not disappointed, though, and feels his charge could have picked up a place if conditions had been a little softer.

"If you're going to win a race like the National, you have to have absolutely everything in your favour and on that ground they just went half a cock too quick for him," said the Greystoke handler. "Maybe we shouldn't have run him, but everything is easy with hindsight. I've still got a horse and he's fine, so that's the main thing. He might be back there next year, but I'm not going to say I'll be training him for the National."

The Midnight Club was sent off favourite for Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh and was far from disgraced in finishing sixth after an early mistake. "The Midnight Club is obviously a bit tired, but he's fine," said Mullins. "I was happy enough with his run. I'd imagine he'll be back there next year."
