Europe: Lionel Messi's tenth anniversary ruined by ankle injury

Lionel Messi was stretchered off with what looked like a serious ankle injury after the Argentina forward and Gerard Pique scored in Barcelona's 2-1 victory at Atletico Madrid yesterday.

Messi celebrated the tenth anniversary of his arrival at Barcelona with a 13th-minute opener before Raul Garcia headed home an equaliser for the hosts in the 25th minute. Pique controlled a corner kick inside the Atletico area to fire home the 33rd-minute winner. Messi picked up his injury in stoppage time.

Valencia lead La Liga with nine points after beating Hercules, who had previously defeated Barcelona 2-1.

In Italy, Samuel Eto'o scored twice as champions Internazionale came from behind to beat Palermo 2-1 in Serie A.

Josip Ilicic put the home side ahead, but former Barcelona striker Eto'o levelled with a fine finish after bursting past his marker in the 63rd minute. Eto'o then earned the Nerazzurri all three points with a close-range strike in the 71st minute.

Juventus, meanwhile, eased their early-season worries with a 4-0 victory over an Udinese side who slumped to a third successive league defeat.

Borussia Dortmund heaped more misery on Schalke yesterday with a 3-1 derby win in Gelsenkirchen in Germany's Bundesliga.

It was one-way traffic from start to finish as Jurgen Klopp's side put on a fabulous show of swift, attacking football.
