Brownlee, the 2012 Olympic gold medallist, had only a nine-second advantage when he took over from Stimpson on the fourth and final leg after team-mates Vicky Holland Jonny Brownlee had struggled to shake off the chasing pack.

However the Yorkshireman brilliantly crushed his opposition with a speedy bike leg, leaving his run to be a lap on honour as the English clinched victory in 1:13.24.

In a three-way scrap for silver, Richard Murray’s run strength paid off in a sprint for the line as South Africa took second place ahead of Australia with Canada just behind.

Scotland ended seventh, over four minutes behind, with their hopes falling away early on.
