Baltacha had lost to Martic in the first round at Wimbledon this year after leading by a set and 5-3, but there was never any danger of a repeat.

The 27-year-old Scot, playing her first match in the main draw at Flushing Meadows, took control of the contest early on and broke her opponent's serve four times on the way to a 6-2 6-2 win on Court 17.

"I really wanted revenge and it feels really good now," Baltacha said. "I knew it could have been a potential banana skin. I knew I would have to take charge, take control from the first point and dictate and that's how I like to play anyway.

"Obviously losing to her at Wimbledon was very difficult to take because I was two points away from the match. I thought I had that one in the bag and then all of a sudden I was 5-3 down in the third set and I couldn't believe it. I took that loss quite hard and there were a lot of things to get over after that match, but it was one of those things that was either going to make me or break me.

"I always try to think things happen for a reason, however hurtful, and after Wimbledon really tested me mentally and emotionally. There were a couple of demons there and after today I think I've flicked the demons off my shoulder.

"You always want to do well at Wimbledon, to please the home crowd, and you do feel a little bit of pressure of course. It probably hurt more a week after the match, being back at home and having time to think about it.

"But regardless of whether it's Wimbledon, the US Open or anywhere, I don't like losing. I hate losing, it's not a very nice feeling.

"I think I learned a lot of things from that match at Wimbledon and it helped a lot today. I stayed really positive and I just kept putting her under pressure. I played very well."

Martic showed flashes of ability with some fine winners, but too often gifted Baltacha easy points with double faults and unforced errors. Two double faults in the third game of the first set gifted Baltacha a break of serve, while a shocking miss in the seventh game gave Baltacha another before she served out for the set.

The second set was an exact replica of the first, Martic holding her opening service game to love but then being broken in the third and seventh games again as Baltacha completed an easy win.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray does not yet know for certain when he will get his campaign under way, with the first round unusually stretched over three days in New York, compared to two at the other grand slams.

He is certain to have to wait until today at least, with the opposite side of the draw playing yesterday and Roger Federer beginning his bid for a sixth title in seven years against Argentina's Brian Dabul on the opening night. Murray, who takes on Lukas Lacko in the first round, is in the same half of the draw as world No 1 Rafael Nadal.
