Elena Baltacha qualifies for Indian Wells

ELENA Baltacha provided some much-needed good news for British tennis by qualifying for the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

The Davis Cup humiliation in Lithuania has provided plenty of unwanted headlines for the Lawn Tennis Association this week and heads could yet roll.

Along with Andy Murray, Baltacha has been the main ray of light this year with her climb into the world's top 65 and she continued that good form in qualifying. The Scot beat Russia's Ekaterina Bychkova 6-3 6-4 to book her main-draw spot and will face American Alexa Glatch, a wild card who is ranked almost 100 places below her, tonight for the right to play seventh seed Li Na in round two.

Baltacha said: "It's fantastic. This year already it's the third WTA event that I've qualified for so I'm really pleased. I'm looking forward to playing Glatch. I've never played here before, but I've had two matches already on these courts and I'm ready to get another win."

Anne Keothavong is also in the main draw courtesy of her protected ranking – the Londoner was in the top 50 before she suffered a serious knee injury last year – and will face former top-ten star Anna Chakvetadze.

Murray is seeded fourth in the men's event and has a bye into the second round, where he will meet either Robby Ginepri or Andreas Seppi. Former world No 1 Justine Henin lurks as a dangerous wildcard entry at the desert venue where she won the women's title in 2004. Henin, a seven-times grand slam champion, is scheduled to meet Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova in the first round with 31st-seeded Gisela Dulko of Argentina lying in wait as her next potential opponent. Although Henin has not appeared on the circuit since losing to American Serena Williams in the Australian Open final in late January, she is still one of the best players of her generation and is hungry for further honours. "I am excited to be back on Tour and hope to continue the success I have had thus far in 2010," Henin said.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is the top seed but the Russian faces a tricky path to the final, having been drawn against Belgian former world No 1 Kim Clijsters in the fourth round.

Meanwhile, Goran Ivanisevic has extended his part-time coaching role with Australian Open semi-finalist Marin Cilic. The former Wimbledon champion worked with world No 9 Cilic at the pair's home event in Zagreb last month, which the 21-year-old won.

Ivanisevic will travel with Cilic to the Masters 1000 events in Miami this month and Madrid in May in place of regular coach Bob Brett. "It should be fun," said Ivanisevic. "Bob is still his coach but in Miami and Madrid I am going to be his replacement while he is not there. I will be like a mentor to Marin."
