El- Hadji Diouf: Former Rangers players give their verdict

"I'm surprised by the move, but only in the sense that Rangers were able to capture a player with his playing CV.

"When it comes to the other stuff the thing is that he will be determined to make a go of it up here so he won't want to be any more bother.

"If a player of that quality becomes available, with the size of Rangers squad and the financial restriction in place at the club, it is a good bit of business if you can tie him up.

"We know that Nikica Jelavic is a right good player. He needs a partner, with Kenny Miller gone and James Beattie now out on loan after never seeming able to steer clear of injuries and really get himself fit.

"Having cut it in the English Premier League, Diouf could be the foil for Jelavic Rangers are looking for. And with the league race so tight, that could prove the difference between winning the league or not."

ALEX RAE

Rangers player 2004-06, now assistant manager of Notts County

"Considering some of the things that happened on the field with me, I would be a hypocrite to start talking about Diouf's behaviour.

"All I can say is that I improved as my career progressed, so who knows with him? 'Who are we to judge' is my mantra when it comes to judging footballers as people.

"Controversy does seem to follow him. But it is a shrewd move by Walter Smith because he has brought in forward who Liverpool signed because he was an African player of the year. Big Sam (Allarydce] signed him twice, for Bolton and Blackburn, and he's a good judge.

"I think him coming north is a boost for Scottish football, to be honest. It will generate publicity, and heat of course, but it is all good for business at a time when players with box office appeal having been leaving the SPL.

"It will be fascinating to see whether he starts the Old Firm game Scottish Cup tie on Sunday.

"He is such a ready-made hate figure for the Celtic supporters his presence would crank up the nastiness even more, which is some going for this fixture.

"To be fair to Diouf, he gets stick wherever he plays and it doesn't seem to affect him in the slightest.

"If anything, he appears to feed off it."
