Eilidh is at a loss over flop

EILIDH Child was at a loss to explain what went wrong after fellow Brit Perri Shakes-Drayton upstaged her to claim 400m hurdles bronze at the European athletics championships.

Scots star Child had high hopes of climbing the podium at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona but met her match in the final, finishing eighth in a time of 55.51seconds.

The 23-year-old's performance was in stark contrast to Shakes-Drayton, who finished third behind Bulgaria's Vania Stambolova and Russian favourite Natalya Antyukh after clocking 54.18seconds.

Child was pipped to European Under-23 Championship gold by Shakes-Drayton last year and was not happy at history repeating itself in the Catalan capital.

"I'm absolutely gutted. I lost my stride on the back straight and I was just left behind," said Child. "I tried to catch them on the turn but it was just too late.

"I don't know what happened to me in the back straight.

"I felt comfortable and fine but I lost my stride and then it all kind

if went a bit wrong after that.

"I was trying to fight back a bit and that probably made it a bit worse. I just didn't perform and it's frustrating.

"The experience has been great but it obviously just shows you that no matter how good you think you are this is a different level."
