Edwards and Rogers clear way for Stirling County win

STIRLING County maintained their lead on run-rate in Division 1 with a five-wicket win at New Williamfield over Stoneywood-Dyce.

Batting first in idyllic overhead conditions at New Williamfield, the Aberdeenshire side cruised to 44 in nine overs and looked set for a big score, but the fall of Michael Leask, the first of five victims for Josh Edwards, precipitated a collapse. Left-arm spinner Glenn Rogers destroyed the lower order with 4 for 5 in five overs as the visitors capitulated to 94 all out in only 26 overs, their cause further undermined by a first-ball duck from Jan Stander. Openers Gavin Anderson and Josh Edwards withstood a new-ball onslaught from Stander and Elton Willemse, before a swashbuckling 22 from skipper Phil Rees eased Stirling safely home.

Heriot's were again indebted to the in-form batting of keeper Adam Lockhart-Krause whose fine 50, assisted by Sean Weereratna (32), enabled them to post 145 all out at The Tryst. In reply, winless Stenhousemuir struggled from the start, losing five early wickets, and only a feisty 45 from Graham Gardner offered much resistance as they were bundled out for only 103, with left-arm spinner Matthew Thomas again to the fore with four cheap wickets, assisted by seamer Raja Javed's three top-order victims.

Ayr surprisingly fell to their second successive home defeat as visitors Drumpellier amassed an impressive 257-8 at New Cambusdoon, thanks largely to another impressive innings from overseas amateur Greg Lewis (97), assisted by debutant Indian pro K S Sahabuddin and returning skipper Graeme McLaren, both with 39. Captain Mark Renny's fine 50 and another 40 from Dougie Johnstone kept the home side in the hunt, but with wickets falling regularly they ended up 40 runs light.

Arbroath made it three wins in a row at home to Falkland. An invaluable 58 from Peter Clarke propelled the Lochlands Park side to 196 all out from 98 for 6. After Benny McGill accounted for both openers, only brief cameos from visiting pro Harsha Cooray (39) and Jack Henderson (35) offered hope, but after Cooray was caught and bowled by Craig Ramsay off-spinner Kevin Stott's five-wicket haul wrapped up the innings some 50 runs short.

An unbeaten 120 from overseas amateur Carl Huyser was the highlight of a daunting 268-9 piled up by Poloc at Kirkhill. Penicuik showed plenty of fight but recalled all-rounder Dan Walton's four wickets, following on from his innings of 49, saw the home side edged out by 34 runs, Richard Partington top-scoring with 75.
