Edinburgh's strong finish

EDINBURGH returned to winning ways with a 25-15 victory over Borders at Dunbar yesterday to finish their Scottish Districts under-18 championship campaign with two wins from three matches and secure a tie with Caledonia.

They led 15-8 at half time thanks to two tries by Boroughmuir and former Robert Gordon's College full-back Harris Jones, the second converted by Edinburgh Academy stand-off Fraser Gillies, who also kicked a first-half penalty.

In the second half Gillies added a second penalty before converting a try by No 8 Lawrie Seydakhis, his Academy team mate. For Borders, Selkirk's Josh Welsh kicked a first half penalty, Hawick Wanderers flanker Ruraidh Sutherland crossed for a try and then five minutes before full time fellow Wanderer Stuart Hogg scored and then converted his own try.

In the other match Glasgow bounced back from two defeats to overcome the title favourites Caledonia at New Anniesland with a 17-15 victory.

Remarkably, Glasgow achieved their win despite playing all but three minutes of the match with 14 men after Cartha QP stand-off Scott McInnes was red-carded for an alleged punch.

All the Glasgow points were scored by the powerful Cumnock centre Mark Bennett, who kicked four penalty goals before scoring an impressive solo try from the halfway line to win the match.

For Caledonia the Dollar Academy full back Jamie Urquhart scored a first half try and kicked an early penalty goal in addition to adding the conversion points to a second touchdown from the Kirkcaldy No 8 Dale Turner.
