Edinburgh Uni swimmers show their medal in trials

SWIMMERS representing Edinburgh University had plenty of reason to celebrate with Kris Gilchrist and Kerry Buchan striking gold and Michael Jamieson taking a silver medal in British Gas Scottish National Championships.

The event doubles as the Commonwealth Games trials and, on the third day of competition at Tollcross Leisure Centre in Glasgow, Gilchrist, the 2008 Olympian, staged a repeat of a thrilling British Championship victory over 21-year-old Jamieson in the 100m breaststroke.

This time, the 26-year-old Gilchrist just sneaked the title in 1:02.31 with Jamieson having to settle for silver in a time of 1:02.48.

Both will be chasing medals for Scotland's at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October – and Jamieson will be aiming for revenge when he bids to repeat his British Championship triumph over Gilchrist in the 200m final on Sunday.

While Gilchrist trains in Paris and Jamieson is based at the British Intensive Training Centre in Bath, Buchan is a regular member of Chris Jones' Edinburgh Uni squad and she scored a thrilling win over Hannah Miley in the women's 200m breaststroke.

The 23-year-old has had a hard coupe of seasons due to illness and injury – she was far from fit at the time of the 2008 Olympics – but she proved she is back to form with a great winning time of 2:30.58. Miley was a close second in 2:30.74.

In the women's 100m freestyle, England's Jo Jackson, the world silver medallist in the 400m event, continued her comeback from a winter ruined by severe asthma with victory in 56.75 secs. Second place, and the Scottish title, went to South Aberdeenshire's highly-promising 15-year-old, Sara Hamilton.

David Carry set himself up for a golden hat-trick by leading the qualifiers in the semi-finals of the men's 100m freestyle. The double Commonwealth champion claimed pole position in 50.66 and tonight he will be aiming to add another title alongside the 200m and 400m distances.

City of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick, who has already qualified for the Commonwealths in the 400m and 200m freestyle, set himself up as Carry's biggest threat with a time of 50.84.
