Edina under-14s end their final heartbreak

Edina Hibs manager John Hall praised his side's determination as two goals in each half led his under-14 outfit to victory over Tynecastle in the South East Region under-14 Willie Bauld Cup final.

Along with the team's determination, coach Hall also outlined how far his team had progressed after some misfortune in previous cup finals. "It's been a long time coming, last year we got to two cup finals and unfortunately lost both of them. This is our first of three, and now we're really looking forward to the other two."

A fast-paced and exhilarating tie at Tynecastle Stadium got under way with a penalty claim straight from the kick off as Cameron Jeffrey fell in the box under a challenge from two Tynecastle defenders, but referee Alex Houston ruled for play to continue.

Edina had an opportunity when Jonathon Grotlin found himself with a bit of space five yards outside the box, but the No.?9 struck his shot high into the Gorgie Stand.

It was Tynie's chance to threaten on goal next, and they could have gone one up when Robbie Ewing made a dash down the right and played in a teasing cross, but there were no takers lurking within the box.

They were almost ahead again when Ewing beat the offside trap to leave the midfielder one on one with Hibs keeper Christopher Burt who tipped away Ewing's low shot to keep the score 0-0.

With Tynecastle pushing forward for the first goal, it perhaps came as no surprise within an already action-packed first half that Edina Hibs took the lead.

Jeffrey found some space on the right hand side before floating in a low cross. First to react was Grotlin, who took a touch before firing to Tynie goalkeeper Sean Brennan's right hand side to put Edina a goal to the good. It was Grotlin again who almost doubled Hibs' lead after a deft flick on that went just wide of the far post, after some impressive wing play by midfielder Ryan Dawson.

And Grotlin seemed to have an eye for goal again as the striker attempted a speculative chip from ten yards outside the box, which looked to be curling over Brennan and into the net, however the ball sailed narrowly wide to the relief of the goalie.

After the break, Tynie wasted no time in attempting to level the tie, and Tyler Connachan's shot inside the box slammed off the upright only to fall to Greg Binnie who himself fired towards goal, but his shot was agonisingly cleared off the line to the dismay of the many Tynecastle fans in attendance.

Tynie's hopes were also lifted when Connachan found himself clean on goal with space to run into, however the forward was unable to make a clean connection and Burt tipped the ball away and out to safety.

The game was to take another dramatic turn, when Jeffrey fell in the box under pressure and referee Houston pointed to the spot, with a number of Tynecastle fans and officials aggrieved at the minimal contact that appeared to have been applied to Jeffrey. The striker picked himself up and fired a tremendous spot kick high into the right hand corner of the net to put Edina two up with five minutes to play.

Tynie's frustrations were epitomised when Connachan again hit the woodwork from inside the box, which allowed Edina Hibs to reclaim the Willie Bauld trophy the club won last season.

Tynecastle manager Simon Kinghorn highlighted his team's lack of composure in front of goal as the difference between the sides, with the ball hitting the Edina Hibs upright on a number of occasions.

"We rattled the bar twice, and had a few that went wide of the post," he said. "They had two chances and score with both of them. We're just not getting the luck in front of goal just now.

"It's very difficult for the boys because the same thing happened in the Scottish Cup final. It just not happening for us at the moment."
