East Scotland Warriors tip off in 2014

Edinburgh’s new professional basketball team will be called East Scotland Warriors after the BBL confirmed it will add a second Scottish franchise in 2014.

The club, run by an American group of investors, will be based out of Meadowbank Arena, the former home of the Rocks until their defection to Glasgow 11 years ago.

The Warriors’ owner, Missouri-based Donald Sampley, said: “I am very excited to be a part of professional basketball returning to the city of Edinburgh. I am really looking forward to working with everyone in East Scotland’s basketball community to grow the game, and help put Scotland’s youth basketball players on a pathway to the pros.”

Sampley has pledged to deliver a strong Scottish core for his team although admits that other reinforcements will be required if the Warriors are to be competitive.

However, it may tempt the likes of Great Britain international Kieron Achara, and future home-grown prospects, to return home from overseas exile.

“Having a second professional franchise in Scotland is an exciting prospect for basketball and demonstrates the growth and potential of the sport,” said BasketballScotland chief Kevin Pringle.
